About the History of the First Australians

An extensive research project was conducted over several years to compile the content for this series. The research links and information will form part of the resources for this series. It was rewritten to be read by early and intermediate stages of Grades 1-3. It can be used as content by fluent readers but was levelled to indicate the level of fluency needed.

Topics

The topics chosen were comprehensive and succinct to give an introduction to the many broad areas of study. The First Peoples were not a homogenous group but waves of peoples forming different tribes and groups. Their response in terms of hunting and gathering differed based on climates, food supplies, and skills. The spread of the peoples and the extended period of settlement led to complex kinships structures, oral histories, dance and belief systems which were unique for each of these tribes. These topics for part of the reader series and become an ideal discussion starter and introduction to many aspects of the First Australians.

Production

Beautifully illustrated with original art - these are an ideal addition to any Indigenous or reader series in schools. These would be ideal as Take Home Readers, Guided Readers or HiLo readers. The content is suitable for any study of Indigenous Australians. ACARA place Indigenous context as a priority area and with the inclusion of literacy blocks this series is able to be programmed covering both requirements. A valuable resource addition to any school!

Teacher Guides

We have also produced activity books for History of the First Australians Set 1, Set 2Set 3, Set 4, and Set 5! Each activity book contains 40 pages of activities related to the 20 readers in each set. These activities use the Indigenous Studies content of the readers to focus on literacy and comprehension skills for students, including spelling, handwriting, word recognition skills, and more! These activities will help teachers to integrate the History of the First Australians Reader Series into their classrooms and save time on classroom preparation. You can also see a full Answer Book for Set 1, Set 2Set 3Set 4, and Set 5 to again help teachers save time!

Customer Review:

"I have already used these books in class and they have been great. I like that in this set we have more NSW stories/information. It is great to have a more modern out look that the students can relate their own family situation to…more local stories in the future would be great. Illustrations are beautiful as well. Love the books."
–Maree Hutchison, Aboriginal Education Officer – Wauchope Public School
